Cozumel is part of the second largest barrier reef system in the world, the Meso-American reef system, which spans almost 175 miles (280 km) of ocean between the Gulf of Mexico and Honduras. The island of Cozumel is situated on top of the Mesoamerican Reef (also as SAM, Sistema Arrecifal Mesoamericano in Spanish).
Cozumel was formed by limestone rock and sandy soil, located on the Eastern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula. The island measures 48 km (30 miles) from north to south but only 16 (10 miles ) from east to west. Cozumel is the largest inhabited island in Mexcio, synonymous with scuba diving throughout the world.
